Women have multiple identities, and we must recognize that they cannot be neatly categorized. Never assume that you know how a woman will identify herself by basing your opinion either on her outward appearance or on superficial information about her such as the gender of her current partner. Each person has the right to define herself or himself, and women may do this in surprising ways.
Part of your role as a counselor might be to work with your client to integrate all aspects of her identity. You will need to work hard to find out how the woman understands the different parts of her identity including identity as an alcoholic or a drug abuser. ...
