Adlerian therapy (also known as individual psychology) was developed by Alfred Adler. It can be applied effectively with individuals, groups, couples, and families as well as in the schools. The positive approach views encouragement as a primary strategy in assisting clients to create a more satisfying life by modifying their thoughts, feelings and actions. Additionally, Adlerian therapists help clients to develop their social interest, or feelings of being part of a stronger community system. In this chapter we highlight Adler’s many important contributions to psychotherapy and the application of Adlerian therapy to the contemporary world.
