Abstract

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a behavioral intervention designed by Marsha Linehan for the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD), a disorder characterized by extreme emotional distress, turbulent interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, impulsivity, repetitive self-inflicted injury, and other clinical problems. In this chapter we summarize the major facets of DBT for students and clinicians. We begin with an overview of Linehan’s biosocial theory and assumptions of DBT.
