Consciousness is an active area of both philosophical debates and scientific research. If spirit is consciousness, its base is provided by matter. Chalmers' (2000) discussion of NCC provides a stepping stone to discussing the material basis of consciousness. This chapter also considers the question, “To what extent is a superimposition of the Eastern views of consciousness on this framework possible?”
