Communication is an essential skill for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals when delivering care to patients and their families. Communication skills in practice
Whereas Part 1 focused on you – the student nurse or midwife – Part 2 concentrates on the patient/service user or care group. This section does provide a variety of techniques and tools to address particular health issues, but in the main, we want students to understand that their communicative responses should be compassionate and context-specific. An appreciation of and empathy for the position of the patient/service user are what should underpin interaction. Although psychological tools are helpful in supplying a template for the health professional unsure of how to proceed, there is no substitute for knowledge, understanding and a genuine readiness to listen.
