About 6 years ago, I was asked to contribute a chapter to a handbook in the organizational behavior discipline. This handbook—somewhat like the one you're reading now—was planned as a series of short essays imparting the insights of academic experts on codifying the received wisdom about behavior in the workplace. I was excited to be able to contribute “the” chapter about communication—I'd have the opportunity to reach an audience outside our own discipline and share some of the things we've learned in communication theorizing and scholarship.
