Mark Twain is reputed to have said, “Everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it.” I feel somewhat the same way about organization: Everyone talks about organization but no one seems to know for sure what it is. One strategy is to resort to analogy (Morgan, 1986): An organization is like a machine, or an organism, or a brain, or a system, or a prison.
