The cultivation research tradition started with a very specific goal. It was initially an attempt to provide “Cultural Indicators,” a tool to identify, measure, and monitor various aspects of social life in American society.1 The concept of a cultural indicator was developed to complement economic and social indicators and to provide a barometer of important cultural issues. In the United States, the focus has been on television, because TV is the country's most pervasive cultural institution and most visible disseminator of cultural symbols.
