Having stated in Chapter 1 that “communication creates gender/sex,” we believe that it is essential to examine the verbal and nonverbal ways in which that process occurs. This is our goal in this chapter and the following one. We examine the use of verbal and nonverbal communication to continually create individual, relational, and group gender/sex identities.
The term identity refers to how people define themselves as individuals and as groups. As discussed in Chapter 1, identity includes concepts such as (1) unique individual qualities, such as personality; (2) intersecting group identities, such as gender/sex, race, class, sexuality, and nationality; and (3) contextual role identities, such as friend, lover, student, and supervisor.
