The goals of this chapter are to offer a rationale for this book and to provide insight into its purpose and organization. We offer important background information on demographic trends for English language learners (ELLs) and compare various program models serving ELLs across the United States. We examine how to benefit ELLs through a framework of collaborative teaching practices and define key concepts related to teacher collaboration and co-teaching for the benefit of English language learners.
