The whole area of fiction which can be variously classed as fantasy, magic or science fiction covers a vast territory: the whole realm of ‘what-if?’ ideas. A very loose definition might be ‘stories which explore the possibilities of some kind of paranormal or technical development which is not currently a part of everyday life’.
