Prevalence Studies: A Review
In this review, the results of prevalence studies of child psychiatric disorders in the community are presented. The focus of this review is on general psychiatric dysfunction rather than on specific disorders. The still-preliminary status of most child psychiatric diagnostic constructs and assessment techniques makes it difficult to estimate the prevalence of separate conditions.
Recent community surveys are distinguished from earlier ones by their use of DSM-III diagnostic categories and standardized clinical interviews applied either to the total study sample or to a subsample selected in a two-stage sampling design. We will first review prevalence studies that did not use DSM-III diagnostic categories followed by studies that employed DSM-III diagnostic criteria.
