One of the merits of epidemiological studies has been the demonstration of the numerous conceptual and methodological problems concerning the definition, assessment, and diagnosis of psychopathological manifestations in children. In earlier, mostly clinical, studies, these problems had not been clearly discerned. Clinicians generally failed to examine systematically the accuracy and repeatability with which information could be derived from their mostly unstandardized and idiosyncratic assessment procedures. Furthermore, clinical concepts of psychiatric disorders have been largely based on highly selected samples. This hampered the systematic search for boundaries between disordered and normal behavioral manifestations.
