Important elements of the child's cosmos (Figure 1.2, p. 7) are located in the wider and widest environment, that is society beyond family, close friends, school or any of the other immediate supports towards which the child can reach. The child will be affected by matters such as social policy and socio-economic factors as well as societal attitudes to children and their families, matters which are investigated in this chapter.
