Introduction

In the wake of child abuse and neglect (CAN), some child victims and adult survivors demonstrate positive coping, strength and resilience (Anderson & Hiersteiner, 2008; Jenmorri, 2006; Leckman & Mayes, 2007; Sandoval, Scott, & Padilla, 2009; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004; Wright, Crawford, & Sebastian, 2007). Research indicates that following victimization, about half of children experience severe distress (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder); yet, approximately one-third show no signs of poor functioning or mental health problems immediately following CAN (Adler-Nevo & Manassis, 2005).
