Considering Character Strength Development as an Approach to Addressing Disengagement in Secondary Schools
Introduction
Recent research in the field of education, psychology and well-being has revealed two causes for alarm: declining levels of student engagement and declining levels of well-being (Ainley, 2006; Ainley & Ainley, 2011; Hidi & Harackiewicz, 2000; Hidi & Renninger, 2010; Marks, 2000; Skinner & Belmont, 1993; Switzky & Schultz, 1998). Among other issues, these declines are accompanied by upticks in student dropout rates, stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression (Broderick & Metz, 2009 as cited in Madden, Green, & Grant, 2011). Further, these rates of well-being are transferring over to adult workplaces.
