During my years as an early childhood center and preschool director, it was biting that led to my most significant leadership challenges. Biting is not at all uncommon before the age of 3, occurring most often during the mobile infant and toddler years. Some young children will move through a short phase, whereas more rarely, others will form a biting habit that may take additional support to unlearn. Teething, overstimulation, exhaustion, hunger, and emotional distress can all lead to biting. It’s not fun, it hurts, and it’s certainly behavior that needs to be addressed, just as throwing or grabbing toys, limit testing, and temper tantrums require intervention.
