This chapter extends the discussion of techniques of promoting self-understanding to the final phase, the point when clients are ready to end the career counselling relationship, either temporarily or permanently.
The use of scaling techniques from solution-focused therapy and coaching is again useful at this stage (see also p. 61 and p. 99) and will be described, together with ways of agreeing tangible objectives and action plans.
The closer clients come to a decision, the more they may experience and show ‘resistance’. The feelings associated with such resistance and ways of enabling clients to address their dilemmas will be discussed, together with exercises to assist clients in moving towards a decision.
