Spain was a stimulus and exemplar for the English foray into the Atlantic. England had precedents for empire building in her backyard; for several decades, she had pursued a policy of aggressive expansion with her Welsh, Scottish and Irish neighbours. In medieval England, privateering was a favourite pastime and the English kings had turned a blind eye to the piracy originating from the Cinque Ports (the five ports of Hastings, Hythe, Dover, Sandwich and New Romney) probably because their piratical activities honed the skills of sailors needed by the king during wars.
