This chapter discusses coalitions that have developed for health promotion in the context of urban communities and their accompanying dynamics. In contrast to examining coalitions that have some other goal as the primary focus (e.g., education or business development), this chapter highlights those alliances that have evolved in the arena of overall wellness and morbidity reduction. This broad categorization includes an array of programs from violence prevention and teenage pregnancy to cancer awareness and recreation for older persons. The chapter also examines the role of coalitions in a discussion of their structure and functions in theoretical context and in practical application.
