Significance of Federal and Foundation Emphasis on Coalition Initiatives
The current federal and foundation emphasis on coalition initiatives reflects the belief that collaboration is essential to effective community development to affect the pervasive social and health disparities that exist in the African American community. The development of coalitions of agencies, institutions, and community members that focus on disease prevention and health promotion initiatives is currently increasing in popularity as an intervention aimed at strengthening the social fabric (Butterfoss, Goodman, & Wandersman, 1993).
