An Historical Analysis of Health and Collaborative Efforts in African American Communities
In examining coalitions for health promotion in African American communities, it is important to place this focus in historical context. African Americans have had an ominous history with respect to health care and their general welfare in the United States. Prior to the Emancipation Proclamation and the ending of the War between the States (Civil War), the health and welfare of most African Americans were the responsibility of the property owners (slaveholders).
