The end product of recreational reading and reading other texts is comprehension. Comprehension and word recognition are highly related, and knowledge and use of vocabulary skills are effective predictors of comprehension ability. Nagy and Scott (2000) and Pressley (2002) tell us that vocabulary knowledge makes up as much as 70% to 80% of comprehension, so we cannot deny that vocabulary is of critical importance to comprehension.
