The Importance of Relationships

Madeline Church and her colleagues (2002) have suggested the image of a physical net as a metaphor for the anatomy of networked learning (see above figure). Essentially, nets are made out of threads and knots. Threads, tied together in knots, provide the structural integrity of the net; this is what makes the net “work,” so to speak. In the networked learning community (NLC) model, the threads represent the relationships between the partner entities (the schools and the people who represent them), while the knots are the substance of collaboration.
