The Bhakra Nangal Project1 is one of the most well-known dam projects in India. It is a multi-purpose project that includes a massive dam on the Sutlej river at Bhakra and a barrage downstream at Nangal. The project was the largest single investment scheme in the First Five-Year Plan (1951–56), and the investment continued well into the Third Five-Year Plan (1961–66).
