The adoption of standards for school leaders is well on the way to becoming a global phenomenon with the introduction of standards for head-teachers and principals in the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, with other countries set to follow.

The use of standards to describe and evaluate headship has become central in England since their introduction to the national scene in 1997 as a precursor to the NPQH. There have been two further sets of standards published since then, with the latest version being published in 2004.
