From the first moment you decided to apply for headship you began the process of conscious preparation for the job. Before that you had probably accumulated a number of personal and job experiences that prepared you for headship, but had not thought of yourself as a headteacher, so were moving toward the job in an unconscious mode. Some applicants to headship will have made the decision early in their life or in their career that some day they would like to be a headteacher.
