Working with pupils whose behaviour is challenging is perhaps one of the most demanding but potentially the most rewarding aspect of school life. Many teaching assistants are employed specifically to work with pupils who present emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). Those of you who regularly work with individuals or groups of pupils whose behaviour is considered to be problematic will be able to relate to the experiences of the pupils and teaching assistants in this chapter. Those of you who don't tend to work with these pupils will no doubt be aware of children in your school who present with more challenging behaviour.
