Sustainable assessment cultures

In this chapter we discuss how intelligent accountability systems give greater recognition and support to the professionalism of teachers, particularly in times of major assessment and curriculum reform. We explain how teachers use standards, judgement practice and achievement data to make decisions appropriate for formative and summative purposes. We use case-study material of exemplar pedagogic and classroom assessment to illustrate the concept of front-ending assessment at the local professional level in order to achieve coherence with system-level curriculum and accountability demands. We explain how teachers engage students in judgement practice using achievement standards in classroom assessment practice that is explicit, defensible and aligned to their pedagogy.
