Perhaps the most important development in educational leadership assessment is the distinction between evaluation and coaching. It is directly analogous to the distinction in the classroom that Rick Stiggins has thoughtfully offered: that is the distinction between assessment of learning and assessment for learning. In the context of leadership assessment, we might suggest the comparable distinction between assessment of leadership performance and assessment for leadership performance. As the research presented earlier in this volume makes clear, assessment of leadership performance has been problematic.
