Introduction
This chapter is an introduction to theories of personal change, specifically learning and transformation. Learning can take place at different levels. Sometimes, we learn a new skill, such as how to paint a wall. It joins our repertoire of skills, but has little impact on us beyond that. The expression ‘transformational learning’, however, refers to the process of readjustment of values and beliefs about oneself, the world and others in the world. This kind of learning occurs through critical reflection (Mezirow, 1981). Hence we use both concepts – learning and transformation – as outcomes that we might reasonably expect to occur during the coaching process.
