This book began by connecting the research on academic language and literacy to academic vocabulary, with particular emphasis on Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic words. A system for selecting words to teach, a seven-step process for pre-teaching vocabulary, and methods for teaching vocabulary during and after instruction were also introduced.

Overcoming Challenges

As discussed in Chapter 1, some teachers may feel overwhelmed when trying to determine and meet the vast vocabulary needs of their ELLs and SELs.
