How Do Students Master the Words?

After pre-teaching five key words, students read aloud with their partners, alternating sentences. As they read with a buddy, they begin to grasp a deeper meaning of these words in context as well as other unfamiliar words. When they finish a paragraph, they summarize orally what they learned in that paragraph, using as many Tier 2 and Tier 3 words as appear. Kindergarten and first-grade readers may need to summarize after each page or before turning the page as many emerging reader texts have one- or two-sentence paragraphs.
