Introduction: The Legal Case for Transmission

A refinement and extension of the earlier discussion of transmission in the last chapter may be achieved with the introduction of the ‘lgal’ criterion. To the Neugebauer criteria (that is, identification of methodological similarities, establishing the existence of communication routes and constructing a plausible chronology for the transmission) we add the legal standard of proof—that is, establishing the existence of motivation, opportunity and ‘incriminating’ evidence, both of a circumstantial and documentary nature.
