Until recently there was a misconception that mathematics in India made no progress after Bhaskara II who lived in the twelfth century ad and that later scholars seemed ‘content to chew the cud’, writing endless commentaries on the works of venerated mathematicians who preceded them, until they were introduced to modern mathematics by the British.
