In Chapter 3 we discussed building rapport with teachers, which is the groundwork necessary for collegial, professional relationships. Such relationships are critical to mathematics coaches' success as agents of change that improves teaching and learning. Trust is necessary for all change initiatives and paves the way for coaches to work directly with teachers to improve their use of instructional strategies. To accomplish this end, coaches engage in planning lessons with teachers and in coteaching some lessons.
