Mike Reed has assembled a ‘big book’ that offers something different to the numerous core textbooks offering factual content already on the market. By meeting the lecturer's need for a text that shows students how to think, read, reflect and write critically, his proposed new Core text would have the USP of being a critical course companion.

Each chapter explores a number of interrelated features that are necessary when considering quality ECEC provision. There are five chapters, all of which take a particular position and encourage the reader to reflect on that position and critically examine the content from a number of perspectives.
