Chapter 24: Fostering Effective Advisory Councils
Fostering Effective Advisory Councils
Advisory councils are a formal group involved in school governance. The council should be involved in studying school issues, planning for improvements, and fostering positive school and community relationships. The key focus is to improve the quality of school life. Every school has an advisory council that includes parent representation. The mandates or names may change from place to place, but societal expectations relating to school accountability remain the same.
An effective advisory council will improve the trust, morale, and cohesion of the school community. The council should have both continuity and turnover in its membership, have enough members to serve the needs of the school community, and meet with appropriate frequency.
