11.1: The Place of Earth Science in the Curriculum
Investigations into the properties of materials and their origins (Chapters 7–10) make it possible to integrate work in science closely with technology. In a similar way, Earth science is a part of the curriculum in which science and geography meet and interact.
Changes in our environment, whether natural or brought about by human activity, cannot be adequately understood without reference to fundamental ideas on physical and chemical change (Chapters 6 and 9). A useful starting-point is the concept of the Earth as divided into three parts: the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere (∗11.1) which correspond to the three phases of matter: gas, liquid and solid (see Section 6.1).
