Marion, Frances (1888–1973)

At the turn of the 20th century, talented women seeking a place to demonstrate their capabilities as professional artists flocked to young Hollywood, which welcomed them with open arms. Still a young industry, Hollywood had not been infiltrated with the male prejudices these women found in other fields. Because the public at that time did not view film making as a serious business, the women who came here found an abundance of career opportunities. Not only could they work as actresses in front of the camera, but they also found work and success as directors, writers, and producers. One such woman, who contributed much to the success of the rising industry, was Frances Marion, actress, writer, director, and producer.
