Handler, Ruth (1916–2002)

Ruth Handler was the motive force behind the creation of Mattel Inc., a producer of America's most enduring toys of the 20th century. She was the 10th and last child of the Mosko family. Her mother gave birth at age 40, and due to her mother's poor health, Ruth's Aunt Sarah and her husband raised Ruth. Sarah, an accomplished businesswoman, always worked outside the home and became the role model for Ruth. By age 10, Ruth was working in her aunt's drugstore. She developed a preference for working instead of playing with other children and toys.

Ruth met her future husband and business partner, Elliott Handler, in 1932 when she was16. Their relationship was on again/off again, particularly due to her aunt's animus toward Elliott. ...
