Red Shirt, Delphine (1957-)

Delphine Red Shirt is a member of the Lakota Indian tribe and is the best-known writer from that particular group. Her ability to bring out the cultural heritage and beliefs of her people enable readers to glance into the life of a Lakota Indian. Her best known work is Bead on an Anthill: A Lakota Childhood. In this work, she cleverly mixes Lakota language with English to bring out the greatest and most authentic representation of the Lakota way of life. She tells of how her grandmother teaches her to string beads together, and describes her part in a ceremonial dance where she dresses in buckskins and beads.
