Bird, Gloria (1951-)

Native American author and poet Gloria Bird was born in Washington State and is a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians in Wellpinit, Washington. She attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, while she was in high school. After high school, she attended Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Lewis and Clark College, also in Portland, in 1990. In 1992 she received a master's degree in literature from the University of Arizona.

Bird returned to the Institute of American Indian Arts and taught literature and creative writing for 5 years after graduating from the University of Arizona. During these years she published her first book of poetry, Full Moon on the Reservation, ...
