The Bahamas is an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean, north of Cuba and southwest of Florida. This prosperous country earns major income through tourism, banking, and financial management and provides basic social and health services to all its population. In 2009, per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was estimated at $29,800, which is the second highest among Caribbean nations, and less than 10 percent of the population live below the poverty line. Most of the population (85 percent) is black, the remainder white (12 percent) and Asian or Hispanic (3 percent), and most Bahamians identify themselves as Christians.
