The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has a population of 147 million, of which 51.4 percent are male and 48.6 percent are female. The majority lives in rural areas; about 48.3 percent of females reside in rural areas, as compared to 57.7 percent males.

Since inception in 1947, Pakistan has had a tumultuous history. It was created as a homeland for Muslims in south Asian when the British Indian Empire crumbled and consisted of two large areas, East Pakistan and West Pakistan, divided by Indian land.
