Gro Harlem Brundtland is one of the former prime ministers of Norway, and has had a long career as a leader on public health and environmental issues. Brundtland began her career in medicine, earning a medical degree from the University of Oslo in 1963 and a Master's of Public Health from Harvard University in 1965. After working as a public health physician in Norway, she went on to a position in Oslo's Board of Health, where she focused on children's issues, and then served as director of health services for the Norwegian public school system. She served as minister for environmental affairs for five years and, in 1981, was elected Norway's first female prime minister (and its youngest, taking office at the age of 41).
