Victimology

Although victimology as an academic discipline is a relatively new concept in the United States, the victim's movement continues to gain strength and momentum across the country. States and the federal government continue to enact laws giving victims of crime more opportunities to participate in the criminal justice system.

Currently, there are very few academic institutions offering courses of study in this discipline. Some universities do offer courses, typically found in the departments of sociology, social work, criminology, and psychology, that examine various aspects of the victimoffender relationship. Victimology is a discipline that combines theoretical research with practical experience. Although there is some interaction between these two groups or approaches, there is still a great deal they can learn from each other.
