A significant proportion of the world's population lives in circumstances that are fraught with a lack of resources, poverty, and persecution including through war and other forms of extreme conflict. Subcultures and ethnic minorities of some countries are subject to mass atrocities by the ruling governments and/or from the rebel groups who seek to oust such political regimes (e.g., Burma, Sudan, and Chechnya). It is understandable then that despite the love of one's home, thousands of people every year make an extremely difficult decision to flee their homes to seek refuge in a place of perceived relative safety.
