Separatists are members of a distinct cultural, ethnic, political, or religious group who advocate various degrees of autonomy for their group or detachment of their group from the dominant population within a country. Many such movements advocate complete separation from the parent country and the establishment of full political sovereignty for the group in the territorial area it occupies. The concept of a separatist movement is often regarded as synonymous with an independence or secessionist movement. This is the type of separatist movement with which the general public is likely probably familiar, given the attention such groups have received in the popular media.
