Modern society is increasingly complex, with large and growing populations, massive world poverty, decreasing natural resources, environmental pollution, increased technology, religious fundamentalism, lack of equal opportunity for all people, and an ever-widening gap between rich and poor all contributing to today's political and societal problems. Two of the major problems facing the world are illegal narcotics and terrorism. Unfortunately, since the 1990s these two activities have combined in ways that greatly enhance their individual destructive potential. This phenomenon has been called narcoterrorism.
